The Need
Haven For Men
There is a real need for services for men in crisis in Northern Ireland as they escape and recover from domestic abuse, with or without their children. At Men's Alliance NI we have an ambition to help.
There is a real need for services for men in crisis in Northern Ireland as they escape and recover from domestic abuse, with or without their children. At Men’s Alliance NI we have an ambition to help.
Stage 1 – Currently there are no beds available in NI to give men the confidence to leave, and stay away from abusive relationships despite 2019/2020 PSNI figures showing that out of 30,000 reports of domestic incidences each year, 10,000 or one third are received from men. The real figure is almost certainly higher given the stigma and shame felt by men about domestic abuse adding to their fear and reluctance to report it.
Our ambition and hope is that we will establish a unique facility, Haven Wood, which will operate 24-hours a day across the year to ensure men do not need to make a choice between their own safety and their children’s.
The safe space, giving men temporary housing, services to meet their psychological, emotional, practical, social and peer support needs will be located in a secluded, gated rural area on extensive lands, in the Lagan Valley area.
The Facility
Staffing & Funding
Recruitment and funding plans are also being developed for the establishment of a full management team including a Services Manager, Residential House Managers, Sessional Counsellors to support men in crisis and a dedicated Fundraiser.
This is a huge project dedicated to the men in need, if you would like to help at any level please get in touch.
Stage 2 – There is not only a need for housing and crisis care, but also a dedicated facility available to men who need support and understanding. A central hub where they can avail of a range of services and resources, giving them support and belief in a caring and non judgemental space as they recover from their abuse.
Further Development
